Carbonated vs. still water, which one is better for you? Looking at the various opinions that are out there, it’s evident that debate might rage on for a very long time. One thing that both sides of the debate agree on is that water is essential to life. It sustains your cells, organs, and metabolic functions. But the question is are both types of water equal in their benefits for you?

Carbonated (or sparkling) water is basically fizzy water – a type of water in which carbon dioxide gas has been dissolved. The resultant mixture is known as carbonic acid. It is the same carbonation process that is used to make most soft drinks.
The Pros of Carbonated Water
This benefit is exclusive to sparkling water. Now, in case you don’t know, sparkling water differs from other types of carbonated water because it occurs naturally. Water from artesian wells passes through various layers of the ground, and as it does so, it mixes with carbonates to produce carbonated water. Reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases
Speaking of nutrients, one study found that carbonated water that is rich in sodium may help reduce the risk of various cardiovascular diseases. Before you get all excited you should probably know that the research was specific to postmenopausal women.
Obviously, that point throws many people out of the bracket, but there’s still some good news. Carbonated water may also improve digestion and gallbladder emptying in virtually everybody. I know that if I have an upset stomach, this is my go to before any other medicine.
Has no calories
All types of carbonated water have no calories. That makes them very healthy for you compared to other soft drinks because they (the carbonated waters) won’t cause obesity or diabetes.
Compared to plain water, carbonated water is fizzier in a way that might make you enjoy the beverage more. Therefore you shouldn’t find it hard to stay hydrated.
You’ve probably heard it before that carbonated water leaches calcium from your bones and can make them weaker. The jury is still out on that particular claim but the truth of the matter is that there is an obvious connection between carbonated drinks and dental erosion. While carbonated water might not have the same detrimental effects as most soft drinks (because of difference in PH), it does cause a negligible amount of dental erosion to be aware of.

In the simplest terms possible, still water is any other type of water that is not carbonated. That includes tap and bottled water. Most of the still water that we consume actually comes from the earth’s surface, but there are some populations (precisely 40% of the world’s population) that rely almost solely on underground water sources like wells and boreholes.
So what are the pros and cons of this type of water?
It is the healthiest type
Unless you are drinking contaminated water, there is no way still water can affect you. Actually, experts recommend that you drink as much water as possible. The fact that still water has no sweeteners, flavors, or carbon dioxide makes it completely risk-free, no matter how much of it you drink.
Before you run away with this idea, there are some studies that say too much water can be bad for you. It is good to at least read up on the other side of the argument.
Better dental health
Most water supplies are fluoridated and that helps keep teeth strong and prevents them from decay, a pretty sharp contrast to carbonated water that we have already established might cause gradual tooth decay.
Free from bacteria
Still water has the added advantage of chlorine treatment that kills bacteria and other microorganisms. Therefore, as far as your health goes, it adds a layer of protection.
Most water companies perform extra special treatments (like ozonation and distillation) to remove impurities. That increases the health standard of still water.
It is plain
Of course, the first problem that is associated with still water is its very plain nature. It is tasteless, odorless, colorless, and has no bubbles like carbonated water. That kind of makes it a boring beverage for many people who will still then reach for a soda or another drink on top of water.
Prone to contamination
Most water sources (like dams and rivers) are in the open, and thus prone to contamination. To make matters worse, some water companies use lead pipes to transport it to homes and companies. That increases the risk of lead leaching into the water system and causing gradual health problems. Therefore, if not well treated and transported, still water can actually be hazardous to your health.

Ultimately your goal should be to stay as hydrated as possible, and therefore if carbonated water doesn’t affect you in any way then go for it. Otherwise, still water is always the safer choice between the two. For me, I think it’s a personal choice, kind of like wine. Whichever one you prefer, is the right answer for you.
